It is required to develop novel high specific energy battery systems for the development of electrical vehicles. The Li-O2 battery possesses extremely high theoretical energy density which is potential to meet this demand. In this studykey cathode materials for non-aqueous Li-O2 battery are designed based on the concept of fabricating the excellent catalyst for oxygen reactions, aiming at improving the energy conversion efficiency and cycle life of Li-O2 battery. Transition metal nitrides have been shown to have excellent catalytic activities in a variety of reactions, which exhibits high Pt-like electrocatalytic activitiesNanostructured materials of transition metal nitrides are employed as excellent cathode catalysts in Li-O2 batteries. The main contents are listed as follows:(1) Mesoporous molybdenum nitride/N-doped carbon (MoN/N-C) nanospheres as catalysts for Li-O2 battery: MoN/N-C nanospheres are synthesized by hydrothermal method followed by ammonia annealing. The as-prepared MoN/N-C nanospheres manifest considerable electrocatalytic activity towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in nonaqueous electrolytes due to its nanostructure and the synergetic effect between MoN and N-C. Furthermore, the MoN/N-C nanospheres are explored as cathode catalyst for Li-O2 batteries with tetra-(ethylene glycol) dimethyl ether (TEGDME) as the electrolyte. The assembled batteries deliver alleviated overpotential and improved battery lifespan, and their excellent performances should be attributed to the unique hierarchical structure and high fraction of surface active sites of cathode catalyst. (2) Iron molybdenum nitride (Fe3Mo3N) as ORR catalyst for Li-O2 battery: Bimetallic nitride Fe3Mo3N was synthesized by co-precipitation method followed by ammonia annealing, which shows more excellent ORR performance than single component Mo2N and Fe2N in both aqueous and non-aqueous electrolyte. When Fe3Mo3N was used as the cathode catalyst with TEGDME containing 1M LiTFSI as the electrolyte in the Li-O2 battery, the cell showed good cycling ability over 25 cycles under a controlled capacity (500 mAh g-1). These results indicate that Fe3Mo3N can clearly facilitate ORR processes by reducing the overpotential of the Li-O2 battery cathode.(3) Cobalt molybdenum nitride (Co3Mo3N) as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for Li-O2 battery: Bifunctional electrocatalysts for the ORR and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) play a critical role in fuel cells and metal-air batteries. In this part, mesoporous Co3Mo3N is prepared using a coprecipitation method followed by ammonia annealing treatment. Much more active sites generated by well designed mesoporous nanostructure and intrinsically electronic configuration lead to excellent electrocatalytic performance for ORR/OER in Li-O2 cells.  The discharge capacity of the Co3Mo3N-based Li-O2 battery in TEGDME electrolyte containing 1M LiTFSI stabilizes above 1670 mAh g-1 on the successive 16 cycles at a deep discharge to 2.0 V, delivering considerable specific capacity and alleviated polarization. It is manifested that high charge-discharge efficiency and good cycle stability was obtained owing to a stable interface between optimized electrolyte and electrode material.(4) Studies of interface stability between transition metal nitrides (Co3Mo3N) and electrolyte: Co3Mo3is explored as cathode catalyst for Li-O2 batteries with LiClO4/PC-DME, LiTFSI/TEGDME, LiTFSI/C4mpyrTFSI, or LiTFSI/DMSO as the electrolytes respectively and their electrochemical performance are investigated. The results showed that the stabilities of the electrolyte are related to the cathode materials. In order to enhance the performance of Li-O2 battery, it required to match each other between cathode materials and electrolyte. Due to the stable interface between Co3Mo3N and TEGDME, the electrochemical performance of Li-O2 batteries with LiTFSI/TEGDME is an optimized choice among these electrolytes. The main reactions are the formation and decomposition of lithium peroxide during the charging and discharging, and the formation of a stable three-phase interface between the transition metal nitrides and TEGDME is critical to improving the performance of Li-O2 batteries.
